In this study, the tensile properties of API 5L X52 steel was studied by mechanical compression testing and the fracture mechanics were determined by 3D FEM. The fracture surfaces and the striations found on the fracture surface of the tensile specimens were used as an indicator of brittle fracture. After the fracture toughness was calculated, the relationship between the fracture toughness and the local Vickers hardness of API 5L steel is obtained. In addition, the strength of API 5L steel was determined from the tensile strength and the strain, and the effect of heat treatment on the tensile properties and fracture of API 5L steel is discussed.
The growth of softening cracks in the form of striations has been observed in tensile tests at crack loci to this study. In this study, the behavior of such cracks was studied. A case example is presented, in which the occurrence of striation characteristic of softening cracks is observed in the case of a cold-rolled steel pipe by 3D FEM-based stress analysis. The FEM analysis was conducted to analyze stress distribution and to determine the pressure at the crack tip. This hydrostatic pressure distribution and failure stage of a fracture caused in cold-rolled steel pipes are shown.
There was used the 2D FEM model BEMAX® software for analysis of the stress distribution along the pipe axis in a heaving seismic environment by comparison with the FEM model USESEP. The obtained values of pressure distribution at the plane of the convectional strengthening of copper pipe were satisfactory, with a better result in the case of the copper pipe strengthened with the double layer.
